Treasures: A Final Go Through Grandma's Closet
Things can be just things - but the meaningful ones are imbued with a spirit of those that loved them.
Since my Grandma Enid passed, my family recently took a trip to her place in Florida. It's been many years since I started combing her closet for treasures, but this tour through her life was weighted with finality. Anything that didn't catch our eyes would likely be donated.
Everything I took home spoke to me on a deep level - does this object bring me joy? Does it remind me of my grandmother, in the way I want to be reminded? A tiny pitcher with a face that looked like the Man of the Moon, a ceramic genie jar, a necklace with a heavy amber bead, a door stopper with an owl perched at the end, yet another silk scarf, a stone figurine, a blue glass bracelet, Russian nesting dolls, a jewelry box with a beaded bracelet spelling out "Enid" tucked inside. My grandmother traveled the world until very close to the end of her life and I can't even begin to imagine where she found most of these items.
In the meantime, I'll be their new guardian.
